Hello all- this is my first saltwater build and first tank in about 20 years. When I started digging into this project I was blown away by the level of technology now available. I’m a big fan of automation/smart home gadgets so the Apex was first on my list. When I found out is has Alexa compatibility I was sold!

Anyways- looking forward to being a part of the community. Here’s a few shots of my first steps.

I built a basic framework for the stand. For the base/top I picked up a roll of special order Formica and essentially built two matching countertops. The undersides are covered as well so it’s all waterproof. (and really heavy). Back of the tank was sprayed with Plasti-dip.

Once everything is up and running the stand will have 3 removable panels- I’m undecided as to what material to use as of yet. More to follow

Got everything in place and leveled last night. Filled the display to about 80% to check for leaks and allow for minor settling that may occur.

I was going to use a 40g breeder as a sump but between the extra depth that would have required in my stand and the time needed piecing it all together, I ended going a different route. (my mom quickly claimed the 40g for her own build)

After a few (several) IPA’s at my favorite local brewery (Masthead) I pulled out my phone and picked up a Rollermat Sump from BRS. It’s got all sorts of features and was the perfect footprint to build my stand around. (no silicon work/filter socks played a big part also)

Orange pipes were on clearance at BRS and the new Menards by me is the only place that had schedule 80 fittings. Feel free to call out any plumbing issues.. I didn’t put a ton of time into design.
